Theosophy
From New Age Village
The Theosophical Society was founded in 1875 by famous psychic, Madame H. P. Blavatsky. The movement was a combination of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Kabbalistic practices. The aim of Theosophy was threefold:
- To form a universal brotherhood of man.
- To study and make known the ancient religions, philosophies and sciences.
- To investigate the laws of nature and develop the divine powers latent in man.
Theosophy's objectives were to establish a nucleus of the Universal Brotherhood of Humanity, to promote the study of comparative religion and philosophy and to investigate the mystic powers of life and matter. The conception of the Universal Brotherhood was based upon the oriental idea of One Life -- that ultimate oneness which underlies all diversity, whether inward or outward.

Important Theosophy Concepts
Influential People
Here are the influential figures in Theosophy. It should be noted that upon Blavatsky's death in 1891, several Theosophical societies emerged following a schism in 1895. Annie Besant became leader of the society based in Adyar India, while William Quan Judge headed another Theosophical Society in New York which later moved to Point Loma, Covina, and Pasadena, California, under Katherine Tingley. Theosophy was also not without scandal: Blavatsky was caught several times engaging in fraudulent activities during a séance. Some have defended her by saying these minor incidents were due to the pressure she felt to perform for some clients, but the remedy usually involved a hasty relocation.

Famous artists who investigated Theosophy, include Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Franz Kafka, W. B. Yeats, and T. S. Eliot, in Europe, and Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, Wallace Stevens, and James Jones in America. Composers such as Ruth Crawford-Seeger, Dane Rudhyar, and most famously Alexander Scriabin, were Theosophists whose beliefs influenced their music, especially by providing a justification or rationale for their dissonant counterpoint.

- The Key To Theosophy (By H.P Blavatsky) - A clear exposition in the form of question and answer of the ethics, science, and philosophy of the Theosophical movement. HPB answers questions about basic Theosophy, the inner constitution of a human being, life after death, reincarnation, karma, the practical life, etc. An important introduction.
- The Secret Doctrine (Volumes 1 & 2) (By H.P. Blavatsky) - Continuously in print for over 100 years, the SD remains today the most comprehensive sourcebook of the esoteric tradition, outlining the fundamental tenets of the "Secret Doctrine of the Archaic Ages." Challenging, prophetic, and strikingly modern, it directly addresses the perennial questions: continuity of life after death, purpose of existence, good and evil, consciousness and substance, sexuality, karma, evolution, and human and planetary transformation.
- The Secret Doctrine (Volume 3) (By H.P. Blavatsky) - This rare third volume of the Secret Doctrine (virtually impossible to find) completes the papers left by H. P. B. It is a complete course on Occultism. Almost 100 chapters. Partial contents: One Key to all Sacred Books; The ABC of Magic; Chaldean Oracles; The Book of Hermes; Three Ways Open to the Adept; Hermetic and Kabalistic Doctrines; Numbers and Magic; Egyptian Initiation; Root of Races; The Seven Rays; Secret Books; Tibetan Prophecies; Swedenborg; and more.
- Isis Unveiled: The Master Key to Ancient & Modern Mysteries (By H.P. Blavatsky) - H.P.B.'s first major work outlines the errors of orthodox Christianity & the fallacies of established science against the backdrop of the Esoteric teachings.
- The Voice of Silence (Trans. by H. P. Blavatsky) - H.P.B.'s mystical treatise for those who desire to tread the "Path."
- The Ocean of Theosophy (By William Judge) - A concise survey of the basic teachings to help explain what theosophy is and what it is not. The book is a condensation of all that has been written by the best Theosophists, but written in a style that is more accessible.
